How much does it cost to educate a Michigan student?

Feb 01, 2015

The House Fiscal Agency (HFA) estimates that there is a $454.4 million shortfall in the 2015 General Fund. At the same time, HFA is projecting a $284.4 million surplus in the School Aid Fund. The findings were released just in time for today's Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference.

The news also coincides with Gov. Snyder's signature on SB 423 which directs the Department of Technology, Management and Budget to study whether or not the state is giving enough money to school districts for each student.

According to PA 555, the study must be done within the next year and paid for by the state even though no appropriation was part of the law. The study must include "an examination of the impact of all costs schools face including food service, transportation, building construction and maintenance."
