"U. S. Rep. Debbie Dingle released the following statement on the 85th anniversary of Social Security, which President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law on August 14, 1935.

This month, we celebrate a promise made to our seniors 85 years ago – a promise of economic security and dignity for every American after a lifetime of hard work. John Dingle, Sr. was one of the original authors of Social Security and stood with President Roosevelt as he signed it into law 85 years ago. It was a promise to leave no one behind as they aged.

Social Security is now a part of the fabric of who America is and how we care for our seniors. Two out of every three retirees rely on Social Security for the majority of their income, and millions of families depend on the program for disability or benefits after the loss of a loved one.

In the middle of an economic crisis, the Trump Administration has renewed their efforts to undermine this program, harm its funding, and threaten its existence. Social Security is vital to millions of seniors and their families and now, more than ever, is the time to build upon Social Security. Not undercut its funding and leave seniors frightened and uncertain about their economic future."
