What's the cost of adequate funding of education in Michigan?

Jul 27, 2015

The state is closer to finding out since the process of choosing a contractor to perform an official study has begun with a request for proposals (RFP) posted on the Department of Technology, Management and Budget's website. Potential contractors have until 3 p.m. on Aug. 7 to submit a proposal. The study is part of the negotiations for Proposal 1, the failed road funding ballot proposal.

The contractor chosen has to be able to determine what resources are necessary to provide a public education that helps students earn the credits they need to be considered proficient in various subjects. The contractor also has to determine if school districts receive funds in a way that guarantees all students have an equal opportunity to be proficient.

The Legislature approved the study and allocated up to $500,000 to pay for it. Some legislators were concerned that budget decisions were being made without a real answer to how much it costs to provide an adequate education. The results of the study have to be given to the state by March 31, 2016.
